Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup whole sweet milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons shortening

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Sift the mixture into a larger mixing bowl.
  3. Add cold shortening to the flour mixture.
  4. Combine the shortening thoroughly with the flour.
  5. Make a well in the center and add cold milk.
  6. Stir rapidly until a soft dough forms.
  7. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 30 seconds.
  8. If the dough is too sticky, lightly dust with flour.
  9. Roll the dough out to half an inch thickness for light biscuits or thinner for crusty biscuits.
  10. Cut out biscuits with a floured biscuit cutter.
  11. Place biscuits in a lightly greased pan, brushing tops with melted shortening or oil.
  12. Arrange biscuits to touch for browning on top and bottom, or half an inch apart for lightly crusted sides.
  13. Bake in a preheated 475°F oven for 10 to 12 minutes.
