Ingredients

  • 2 medium heads cabbage
  • 2 heaping teaspoons Crisco
  • 1 onion
  • 2 medium apples
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 5 to 6 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • some beef broth
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Instructions

  1. Remove the cabbage core and shred the cabbage finely.
  2. Saute chopped onion in Crisco until translucent.
  3. Add shredded cabbage, chopped apples, salt, red wine vinegar, and sugar to the onion.
  4. Add water or beef broth to the mixture.
  5. Stir well to combine.
  6. Cover and cook over medium heat, adding more liquid if needed to prevent sticking.
  7. Cook until the cabbage is tender, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
