- Cream the shortening; beat in sugar and salt.
- Add beaten egg yolks, vanilla, milk, and sifted cake flour with baking powder to the mixture.
- Spread the batter in two greased 9-inch round layer cake pans; this will barely cover the bottom of the pans.
- Beat egg whites until very light; gradually add 3/4 cup sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
- Spread the meringue over the batter in both pans. Sprinkle with additional sugar and cinnamon.
- Sprinkle almonds on top of the meringue.
- Bake in a 350°F oven for about 30 minutes.
- Let the cakes cool completely.
- Assemble the cake with cream filling.
