- Spread the batter evenly on two buttered round cake tins.

- Gradually add sugar to the egg whites while beating to make a meringue.
- Spread the meringue on top of the cake batter in one of the layers; sprinkle with chopped pecans.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350°F (175°C).
- Spread whipped cream over the meringue layer, adding strawberries if desired.
- Place the second cake layer on top and serve.
