Ingredients

  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar; add beaten egg yolks.
  2. Mix baking powder into flour and add alternately with milk to the creamed mixture.
  3. Spread the batter evenly on two buttered round cake tins.
  4. Beat egg whites until stiff, adding cream of tartar gradually.
  5. Gradually add sugar to the egg whites while beating to make a meringue.
  6. Spread the meringue on top of the cake batter in one of the layers; sprinkle with chopped pecans.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350°F (175°C).
  8. Spread whipped cream over the meringue layer, adding strawberries if desired.
  9. Place the second cake layer on top and serve.
