- Remove and discard any stones from the navy beans; rinse and drain.
- In a 2 1/2-quart casserole, combine beans and 6 cups water.
- Microwave, covered on High for 16 to 22 minutes, until boiling. Cook on High for an additional 2 minutes.
- Remove from microwave and let stand covered for 1 hour.
- Cook covered at Medium (50% power) for 30 to 40 minutes, until beans are tender but not soft.
- Press cloves into the onion; add the onion and remaining ingredients to the casserole.
- Cook covered on High for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring 4 times until beans are soft.
- If desired, remove and discard the onion before serving.
