Ingredients

  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water (115° to 120°F)
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3/8 cup sugar
  • 1 cup bran
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water (115° to 120°F).
  2. In a large bowl, combine shortening, sugar, bran, and salt.
  3. Add boiling water and mix until shortening melts.
  4. Add 1/2 cup whole wheat flour and mix.
  5. Add beaten egg and mix.
  6. Add yeast mixture (yeast dissolved in water) and mix.
  7. Add 1/4 cup whole wheat flour and mix.
  8. Gradually add unbleached flour (1 cup at a time), mixing after each addition, until the dough is soft and elastic.
