- Dissolve yeast in warm water (115° to 120°F).
- In a large bowl, combine shortening, sugar, bran, and salt.
- Add boiling water and mix until shortening melts.
- Add 1/2 cup whole wheat flour and mix.
- Add beaten egg and mix.
- Add yeast mixture (yeast dissolved in water) and mix.
- Add 1/4 cup whole wheat flour and mix.
- Gradually add unbleached flour (1 cup at a time), mixing after each addition, until the dough is soft and elastic.
