Ingredients

  • 6 slices bread
  • 1 pint milk
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 5 large apples
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/3 cup fine bread crumbs

Instructions

  1. Butter a round cake or pie plate.
  2. Break bread into small pieces and put in a pan.
  3. Add milk and let the bread soak a little.
  4. Add beaten eggs, sugar, and vanilla, then stir lightly together.
  5. Pare and core the apples and cut them as for cake.
  6. Place the apples on top of the bread mixture.
  7. Use 4 tablespoons of butter and dot the top of the cake.
  8. Sprinkle with fine bread crumbs and cinnamon or nutmeg as preferred.
  9. Bake at 350°F for 1 hour until apples are brown and tender.
