Brown Soda Bread

A hearty, wholesome brown soda bread with a slightly nutty flavor from whole wheat flour, perfect for breakfast or pairing with soups and stews. Easy to make and satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
  • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Put all-purpose flour in a bowl; add salt and baking soda and stir together with a fork.
  2. Add whole wheat flour and mix.
  3. Blend butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender.
  4. Make a well in the center and add buttermilk; stir until blended. The dough should be dry enough to knead but not too dry.
  5. Knead on a floured board for about 30 seconds.
  6. Pat the dough into a greased 8-inch pan (black frying pan).
  7. Cut gashes to form a cross on top of the dough.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 30 minutes.
  9. Cool on a rack before slicing.
