Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons butter melted
  • 4 1/2 cups bread flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water; add sugar, shortening, egg, salt, and 1 cup of flour. Beat until smooth.
  2. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  3. Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place about 1 hour.
  5. Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; shape into 1 1/2-inch balls.
  6. Dip the balls in melted butter and arrange evenly in a greased 9-inch fluted tube pan.
  7. Drizzle with remaining melted butter; cover and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Cool for 5 minutes before inverting onto a platter.
