  3. Add chopped onions and bell peppers; simmer until vegetables are tender.
  4. Add cooked bacon, undrained tomatoes, chili powder, cumin seed, chopped squash, salt, and pepper.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of beer or beef broth when simmering. If you prefer a vegetarian version, replace the meats with hearty vegetables like mushrooms or beans. Adjust the chili powder to your spice tolerance, and feel free to experiment with different types of squash. This dish can also be served over rice for a filling meal.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Calavasita hot, garnished with fresh cilantro or avocado slices for added creaminess. It pairs well with corn or tortilla chips for a crunchy contrast. Consider serving alongside flavorful dishes like Steak Quesadillas or a simple green salad to balance the richness of the stew.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, warm gently on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of water if necessary to maintain moisture. For longer storage, freeze in portions for up to 3 months—thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make Calavasita in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can easily adapt this recipe for a slow cooker. Brown the meats and sauté the vegetables first, then transfer everything to the slow cooker. Add the remaining ingredients and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours for a convenient, hands-off approach.

What can I substitute for the bacon?

If you want to reduce fat or avoid pork, turkey bacon or smoked paprika can provide a smoky flavor without the grease. For a vegan option, use a plant-based bacon alternative or skip it altogether, adding extra spices for depth.

Can I use other types of meat in this recipe?

Absolutely! While the recipe calls for beef and pork, you can substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter dish. You might also explore using different beef cuts or even adding sausage for a more complex flavor profile.
