Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped Diamond walnuts
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt into a mixing bowl.
  2. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in 1 1/4 cups of coarsely chopped walnuts.
  4. Add the beaten egg, milk, and vanilla to the mixture and stir until well blended.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of chopped walnuts over the top.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 60 to 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the bread stand in the pan for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool.
