Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup dry milk powder
  • 3 tablespoons safflower oil
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon dry yeast
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 6 cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, dry milk powder, safflower oil, sugar, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix ingredients slowly until well blended.
  3. Sprinkle dry yeast over the mixture in the bowl.
  4. Let the yeast melt into the mixture while you sift the flour.
  5. Add half of the sifted flour (2 cups) to the mixture and beat well for 2 minutes.
  6. Gradually add the remaining flour, little by little, until the dough leaves the sides of the bowl and is clean.
  7. Flour a countertop and knead the dough until smooth and satiny.
  8. Place the kneaded dough in a bowl sprayed with Pam.
  9. Turn the dough upside down in the bowl, greasing the top side.
  10. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in a warm spot or sunlight until the dough doubles in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Tips & Substitutions

For optimal rise, ensure your warm water is around 110°F; too hot can kill the yeast. If you don’t have safflower oil, canola or vegetable oil can be good substitutes. For added flavor, consider incorporating herbs or spices, such as rosemary or garlic powder. To avoid a dense loaf, be careful not to over-knead the dough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour?

Yes, you can substitute whole wheat flour, but it may result in a denser loaf. If using whole wheat, consider adding a bit more water to achieve the desired dough consistency.

What if my dough doesn’t rise?

If your dough doesn’t rise, it may be due to inactive yeast. Make sure to check the expiration date, and ensure your water temperature is warm enough to activate the yeast. If it fails, try a new batch of yeast.

How can I make this bread sweeter?

To enhance the sweetness of the bread, you can increase the sugar to 3 tablespoons or add a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup. Just be mindful that too much sugar can affect the yeast's performance.
