Ingredients

  • 10 slices white bread
  • butter
  • 1/2 lb. grated cheese
  • 2 c. milk
  • 3 beaten eggs
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp. diced onion

Instructions

  1. Remove crusts from bread slices.
  2. Spread butter on each bread slice.
  3. Assemble slices like sandwiches and cut into 1/2-inch cubes.
  4. Place half of the bread cubes in a buttered baking dish.
  5. Cover with half of the grated cheese.
  6. Add the remaining bread cubes on top.
  7. In a bowl, mix milk, beaten eggs, salt, dry mustard, and diced onion.
  8. Pour the milk mixture over the bread and cheese layers.
  9. Cover and refrigerate overnight or let stand for 2 hours before baking.
  10. If refrigerated, bring to room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.
  11. Set the casserole in a pan of hot water for baking.
  12. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour.
  13. Test the pudding before removing from oven.
  14. If too dry, add a little more milk, if needed.
  15. Ensure the cheese melts well during baking.
