- Remove crusts from bread slices.
- Spread butter on each bread slice.

- In a bowl, mix milk, beaten eggs, salt, dry mustard, and diced onion.
- Pour the milk mixture over the bread and cheese layers.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight or let stand for 2 hours before baking.
- If refrigerated, bring to room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.
- Set the casserole in a pan of hot water for baking.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour.
- Test the pudding before removing from oven.
- If too dry, add a little more milk, if needed.
- Ensure the cheese melts well during baking.
