- In a large bowl, cream together the sugar, softened butter, and eggs until fluffy.
- In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually blend the dry mixture into the creamed mixture with the buttermilk.
- Stir in the chopped almonds, chopped maraschino cherries, and almond extract.
- Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan.
- Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, testing for doneness with a toothpick.
- Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack.
