Ingredients

  • 32 caramels
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup oleo (softened butter)
  • 1 cup chocolate bits

Instructions

  1. Melt the caramels with the evaporated milk in a double boiler over low heat until smooth.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the softened oleo (butter) to the dry ingredients and mix until crumbly.
  4. Press half of the oat mixture into a greased baking pan to form the crust.
  5. Spread the melted caramel mixture evenly over the crust.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture over the caramel layer.
  7. Sprinkle the chocolate bits on top of the assembled layers.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Allow to cool before cutting into bars.
