Ingredients

  • 1 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 large package mini chocolate morsels

Instructions

  1. Cream margarine and sugars together.
  2. Add egg yolks, water, and vanilla and mix well.
  3. Sift dry ingredients together and add to the creamed mixture.
  4. Pat dough into an ungreased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  5. Sprinkle mini chocolate morsels over the dough and gently press into it.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes while preparing the meringue.
  7. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  8. Gradually add 1 cup of brown sugar and continue beating until well combined.
  9. Remove the baked dough from the oven and spread the meringue evenly over the top, sealing the edges.
  10. Bake at 325°F for a glass pan or 350°F for a metal pan for 25 minutes.
  11. Allow to cool before cutting into bars, taking care to avoid crumbling the meringue.
