Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 large package chocolate chips
  • 2 cups walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9 x 13-inch pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Add shortening and brown sugar to the dry ingredients and mix well until smooth.
  4. Beat in eggs and vanilla until fully incorporated.
  5. Stir in chocolate chips and walnuts (if using).
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool before cutting into bars.
