Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 2 envelopes or 2 squares chocolate
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup pecan halves or chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except chocolate chips and pecan halves.
  2. Blend at low speed until moistened; then beat for 2 minutes at medium speed.
  3. Pour the batter into a greased 13 x 9-inch pan.
  4. Sprinkle chocolate chips and pecan halves over the batter.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes or until the cake springs back in the center.
  6. Serve plain or with Cool Whip or ice cream.
