Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup nuts
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Boil 1 cup sugar and 2 cups water for 10 minutes to make the hot syrup.
  2. Cream 2 tablespoons butter and 1/2 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the creamed mixture.
  4. Sift together 1 cup sifted flour, 3 tablespoons cocoa, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  5. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and 1/2 cup milk to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Pour the hot syrup into a 1 1/2-quart baking dish.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot syrup.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 50 minutes until cooked through.
  9. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream and top with nuts.
