- Boil 1 cup sugar and 2 cups water for 10 minutes to make the hot syrup.
- Cream 2 tablespoons butter and 1/2 cup sugar until light and fluffy.

- Sift together 1 cup sifted flour, 3 tablespoons cocoa, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and 1/2 cup milk to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition.
- Pour the hot syrup into a 1 1/2-quart baking dish.
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot syrup.
