- Melt shortening and unsweetened chocolate squares together in a double boiler.
- Set aside to cool.
- Mix together soda and buttermilk; set aside.
- Beat together the brown sugar and egg until well combined.
- Add the cooled chocolate mixture and beat until smooth.
- Alternately add sifted flour and mix thoroughly after each addition, starting and ending with flour.
- Add the buttermilk mixture and mix well.
- Stir in vanilla.
- Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to 12 minutes, until cake-like.
- Allow cookies to cool slightly before frosting.
