Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Melt shortening and unsweetened chocolate squares together in a double boiler.
  2. Set aside to cool.
  3. Mix together soda and buttermilk; set aside.
  4. Beat together the brown sugar and egg until well combined.
  5. Add the cooled chocolate mixture and beat until smooth.
  6. Alternately add sifted flour and mix thoroughly after each addition, starting and ending with flour.
  7. Add the buttermilk mixture and mix well.
  8. Stir in vanilla.
  9. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to 12 minutes, until cake-like.
  11. Allow cookies to cool slightly before frosting.
