Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup solid shortening
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 3 heaping tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and shortening; add molasses.
  2. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add to the molasses mixture.
  3. Mix flour with cocoa and salt.
  4. Beat eggs and add vanilla.
  5. Add half of the flour-cocoa mixture to the liquids and beat with a mixer.
  6. Add the eggs and remaining flour-cocoa mixture, beating until smooth.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased and bottom-lined small tube pan (6 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches).
  8. Bake at 350°F for 50 to 55 minutes.
