Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 pkg. quick-rise yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 6 Tbsp. margarine or butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. Heath bits or 4 Heath bars or 18 snack-size Heath bars, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. water

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of the flour and the yeast.
  2. In a saucepan, heat and stir the milk, sugar, margarine or butter, and salt until warm (120° to 130°) and margarine almost melts.
  3. Add the warm milk mixture to the flour mixture and mix well.
  4. Add the eggs to the mixture.
  5. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping the bowl constantly.
  6. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes.
  7. Using a spoon, stir in as much of the remaining flour as you can.
  8. Stir in the chopped Heath bits or bars.
  9. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, then let it rise until doubled in size.
  10. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle.
  11. Spread with chocolate spread or melted chocolate, then roll up tightly.
  12. Place the rolled dough in a greased loaf pan and let it rise again until doubled.
  13. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  14. Mix powdered sugar with water to make a glaze and drizzle over cooled bread before serving.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using whole milk instead of low-fat. If you don't have quick-rise yeast, you can substitute it with active dry yeast, but allow more time for rising. You can also experiment with adding nuts or other chocolate types for variation. Make sure to knead the dough adequately for the best texture, similar to techniques used in Aunt Patty's Pumpkin Bread.

Serving Suggestions

This chocolate swirl bread is perfect for breakfast or dessert. Serve it warm with a side of fresh fruit or a dollop of whipped cream. It pairs beautifully with coffee or hot cocoa. For a delightful treat, use it as a base for French toast, or enjoy it alongside other sweet baked goods like Dropped Sugar Cookies.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover chocolate swirl bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply thaw at room temperature and warm in the oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes to restore its freshness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of chocolate in this recipe?

Yes, you can use any type of chocolate you prefer, such as dark, milk, or even white chocolate. Just ensure that it melts well for spreading on the dough. Adjust the amount based on your taste preference to achieve the desired sweetness.

What should I do if my dough doesn't rise?

If your dough doesn't rise, it may be due to inactive yeast. Ensure that your yeast is fresh and that the milk is at the right temperature when combined. If the dough is cold, place it in a warm, draft-free area to help it rise. Patience is key; sometimes it may take longer than expected.

Can I make this bread ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the dough the night before and let it rise in the refrigerator. In the morning, allow it to come to room temperature before shaping and baking. This method can enhance the flavor, similar to techniques used in other American recipes.
