Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 pound margarine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 packages dry yeast dissolved in warm water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup candied cherries and pineapple
  • 1 1/2 cups raisins
  • Additional flour as needed (about 4 cups)

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk.
  2. Add sugar, margarine, and salt; cool to lukewarm.
  3. Add the dissolved yeast and 3 cups of flour; mix well and let rise for 1 hour.
  4. Add vanilla and beaten eggs to the risen mixture.
  5. Mix candied cherries, pineapple, and raisins with 1/4 cup of flour, then add to the dough.
  6. Add enough flour (about 4 cups) to make a soft, manageable dough.
  7. Knead well and let rise until light.
  8. Divide the dough into greased loaf pans.
  9. Let rise until doubled in size.
  10. Bake at 400°F for 10 minutes.
  11. Reduce temperature to 325°F and bake for about 40 minutes.
  12. Frost with confectioners' sugar before serving.
