Ingredients

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • flavoring oils (cinnamon, peppermint, orange, etc.)
  • food coloring (red, green, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, syrup, and hot water in a saucepan.
  2. Cook the mixture until it reaches 278°F (hard crack stage).
  3. Add flavoring oils (about 1/4 teaspoon) and food coloring (about 1/4 teaspoon) to the hot mixture.
  4. Immediately pour the hot mixture onto a buttered marble or other smooth, heat-absorbing surface.
  5. Use a knife to cut the mixture into 3/4-inch lengths, then snip into bite-sized pieces with kitchen scissors.
  6. Butter your hands to handle the hot candy safely.
