Ingredients

  • 5 egg yolks
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 whiskey glass of whiskey or rum
  • 6 Tbsp. Carnation milk
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 5 to 6 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Beat the egg yolks, whole egg, sugar, salt, vanilla, whiskey or rum, and Carnation milk together.
  2. Add baking powder to the mixture.
  3. Gradually add flour and all dry ingredients to the liquid mixture, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
  4. Roll out the dough and cut into squares.
  5. Tie each square into a knot to form the Angel Wings shape.
  6. Heat hot oil in a deep pan or fryer.
  7. Fry the knots until golden brown.
  8. Remove from oil and sprinkle with powdered sugar while still warm.

Tips & Substitutions

For a lighter texture, let the dough rest for about 30 minutes before rolling. If you prefer a different flavor, you can substitute whiskey or rum with flavored extracts like almond or orange. Ensure the oil temperature is right—too hot will burn the dough, while too low will make them greasy. You can also substitute Carnation milk with any sweetened condensed milk.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Ciaigie dusted with powdered sugar for a delightful treat, perfect alongside coffee or tea. They pair beautifully with Summer Squash And Plum Tomatoes for a light meal or snack. You can also enjoy them with a side of fruit compote or yogurt for a refreshing contrast. For a festive touch, consider serving them at gatherings or family celebrations.

Storage & Reheating

To store leftover Ciaigie, place them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. For longer storage, refrigerate for up to a week. To reheat, warm them in an oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-10 minutes until crispy again. Avoid microwaving, as they may become chewy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dough in advance. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to use, allow it to come to room temperature before rolling out to ensure it remains pliable.

What oil is best for frying Ciaigie?

For frying Ciaigie, oils with a high smoke point are ideal, such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or peanut oil. These oils help achieve the desired crispiness without imparting strong flavors, allowing the sweet taste of the Ciaigie to shine through.

Can I bake Ciaigie instead of frying?

While frying gives Ciaigie their signature texture, you can bake them for a healthier alternative. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C), place the knots on a baking sheet, and brush them lightly with oil. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown, keeping an eye on them to prevent burning.
