- Sift together flour, cocoa, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
- Make three shallow grooves in the dry mixture.
- Pour 5 Tbsp. cooking oil into one groove, 1 Tbsp. vinegar into another, and 1 Tbsp. vanilla into the third.
- Add 1 cup cold water to the remaining groove and pour it over the entire mixture.
- Beat the mixture with a spoon until it becomes nearly smooth and the flour is no longer visible.
- Grease a 9 x 9 x 2‑inch square cake pan and pour the batter into it.
- Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
