Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cocoa

Instructions

  1. Mix shortening, sugar, and egg until well combined.
  2. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  3. Add sifted dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa; mix until smooth.
  4. Spread the batter evenly in a 13 x 9-inch baking pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
