Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 5 stiffly beaten egg whites
  • food coloring

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening and sugar until light.
  2. Add vanilla and mix well.
  3. Sift together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating after each addition.
  5. Gently fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.
  6. Pour the batter into 2 greased and lightly floured 9-inch round pans.
  7. Sprinkle with assorted food colors and use a toothpick to swirl the colors.
  8. Bake at 375°F for 18 to 20 minutes.
  9. Cool for 10 minutes.
  10. Remove from the pans and cool completely.
  11. Use your favorite icing to decorate.
