- In a large mixing bowl, blend 2 cups of flour, sugar, salt, cornmeal, and yeast.
- Combine water, milk, and shortening, then heat to lukewarm.
- Pour the warm liquid into the dry ingredients and blend well.
- Continue adding flour until the dough is moderately stiff.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and let it rise until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough.
- Divide the dough into 32 small pieces, dividing successively with a knife into 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 pieces.
- Roll each piece into a ball.
- Place half of the balls in the bottom of a well-greased tube cake pan.
- Brush these with half of the melted butter.
- Place the remaining balls on top of the first layer.
- Brush with the remaining melted butter.
- Let the assembled bread rise until doubled in size.
- Bake at 375°F for 55 to 60 minutes.
- Turn out of the pan and tap the bottom crust; if it sounds hollow, the bread is done.
- If not, return to oven for a few more minutes, then cool on a rack.
