Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • melted butter

Instructions

  1. Cook cornmeal, sugar, salt, shortening, and milk in a saucepan until thick, like cereal.
  2. Cool the mixture to lukewarm.
  3. Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  4. Add the yeast to the cooled mixture and beat in the beaten eggs.
  5. Add flour gradually to form a soft dough.
  6. Knead the dough thoroughly.
  7. Cover and let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  8. Punch down the dough.
  9. Roll out the dough and cut with a biscuit cutter into rounds.
  10. Brush the cut rolls with melted butter.
  11. Let the rolls rise again until puffy.
  12. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15 minutes until golden brown.
