Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 heaping tablespoons Crisco
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • flour

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar and Crisco until well combined.
  2. Add the egg and beat together.
  3. Sift together about 1/2 cup of flour with baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg.
  4. Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the wet ingredients, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Add more flour until the batter is heavy enough to stand in peaks.
  6. Pour the batter into a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
  7. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes at 350°F (175°C) until golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
