Ingredients

  • 3 cups plain flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Combine the plain flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt in a bowl, mixing well.
  2. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  3. Combine the beaten egg and milk in a separate bowl, then add to the flour mixture.
  4. Stir until the dry ingredients are moistened and a dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead if necessary.
  6. Pat or roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Cut into large biscuits with a biscuit cutter or glass.
  8. Place the biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Serve warm.
