Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup sifted cake flour
  • 1/2 plus 1/8 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cold water
  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla flavoring

Instructions

  1. Beat egg yolks and cold water until thick and lemon in color.
  2. Add vanilla flavoring and sugar gradually and beat until sugar is dissolved.
  3. Sift together cake flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt, then add to the egg yolk mixture.
  4. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into the flour mixture gently.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 325°F (160°C) for 25 to 30 minutes.
  7. Turn the cake upside-down onto a rack to cool.
  8. Loosen the sides of the cake from the pan when cool.
  9. Serve with strawberries and cream.
