- Butter eight 6-ounce custard cups.
- In a small skillet over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup sugar, stirring, until it forms a light brown syrup.
- Pour the caramel syrup into the buttered cups.
- Place the cups in a shallow baking pan for easy handling.
- Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
- In a large bowl, beat eggs, salt, and 1/2 cup sugar at low speed until lemon-colored.
- Gradually beat in milk and vanilla extract.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared cups.
- Put hot water into the baking pan to within 1 inch of the top of the cups.
- Bake for 1 hour, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool on wire racks.
- Refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Use a knife to loosen the custard from the cups and invert onto dessert plates, allowing the syrup to run down the sides.
