Ingredients

  • 4 to 6 portions frozen thinly sliced sandwich steaks, cut into strips
  • 2 Tbsp. margarine
  • salt and pepper
  • cheese of your choice
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 2 (8 oz.) cans crescent rolls
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten, if desired

Instructions

  1. Cook the steak strips in a skillet, then remove and set aside.
  2. Add chopped onion and green pepper to the skillet; cook until crisp-tender.
  3. Unroll one can of crescent roll dough onto a flat stone or baking sheet into two long rectangles.
  4. Overlap one side of each rectangle to form a 13 x 7-inch rectangle and press perforations to seal.
  5. Place cooked steak down the center of each rectangle.
  6. Top the steak with cheese of your choice.
  7. Make 1-inch cuts on each side of the rectangle, just to the edge of the filling.
  8. Fold the ends of the dough at an angle halfway across the filling, alternating sides to create a braided look.
  9. Fold the ends of the dough under to seal the braid.
  10. Repeat the process with remaining ingredients to make a second braid.
  11. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 18 to 22 minutes until golden brown.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding garlic powder or Worcestershire sauce to the steak while cooking. If you're out of margarine, butter works well as a substitute. Feel free to use any cheese you prefer, such as provolone or mozzarella, for a different taste. To add more texture, throw in some mushrooms or jalapeños with the onions and peppers.

Serving Suggestions

Serve warm with a side of marinara sauce for dipping or alongside a fresh salad for a complete meal. This dish pairs beautifully with Mary Jezek'S Broccoli Dip for a delicious appetizer spread. For a fun twist, consider serving it with a side of seasoned fries or potato wedges.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover Crescent Cheese Steak Braid can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 minutes until warmed through. This will help maintain the crispness of the crust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the braids in advance and store them in the refrigerator before baking. Just cover them with plastic wrap to keep them fresh. When ready to cook, bake directly from the fridge, but add a few extra minutes to the baking time.

What can I use instead of crescent rolls?

If you don't have crescent rolls, puff pastry or even pizza dough can be good alternatives. Puff pastry will give a flakier texture, while pizza dough will result in a chewier bite. Adjust baking times as necessary based on the dough used.

Is this recipe suitable for meal prep?

Absolutely! These braids can be made in bulk and frozen before baking. Just wrap each braid tightly in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe bag. When ready to enjoy, bake directly from the freezer, adding a few extra minutes to ensure they heat through.
