Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 cups flour, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • Grated orange rind from 1 orange
  • 7 oz. package dates, cut and rolled in small amount of flour
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Sift dry ingredients (flour, soda, salt) together and set aside.
  2. Beat softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add orange juice and grated orange rind to the butter and sugar mixture.
  4. Alternately stir in dry ingredients and buttermilk into the mixture.
  5. Stir in the dates (coated lightly with flour) and chopped nuts.
  6. Grease and flour a Bundt or angel food cake pan.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for nearly 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. While the cake is hot, prepare the orange sauce by rubbing grated orange rind into 1 cup of sugar.
  10. Heat the sugar and orange rind mixture until the sugar is dissolved.
  11. Pour the hot orange sauce over the cake.
