- Sift dry ingredients (flour, soda, salt) together and set aside.
- Beat softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add orange juice and grated orange rind to the butter and sugar mixture.
- Alternately stir in dry ingredients and buttermilk into the mixture.
- Stir in the dates (coated lightly with flour) and chopped nuts.
- Grease and flour a Bundt or angel food cake pan.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for nearly 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is hot, prepare the orange sauce by rubbing grated orange rind into 1 cup of sugar.
- Heat the sugar and orange rind mixture until the sugar is dissolved.
- Pour the hot orange sauce over the cake.
