Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 2 2/3 cups flour
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/3 cups 2% milk
  • 2 teaspoons flavoring
  • 4 egg whites

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt together in a separate bowl.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  4. Stir in flavoring.
  5. Beat egg whites stiffly and fold into the batter gently.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes for layers or 35 to 45 minutes for oblong cake, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
