- In a large bowl, combine self-rising cornmeal, 1 cup of flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
- In a saucepan, heat water, molasses, butter, fennel seed, and anise seed to 120°F.
- Pour the hot mixture over the dry ingredients.
- Beat in the lightly beaten egg and 1 cup of flour.
- Add the remaining cup of flour and knead lightly.
- Divide the dough into two small bread pans or shape into one loaf in a regular-sized pan.
- Place in a warm spot and let rise until doubled in size.
- Bake at 375°F for 30 minutes.
