Ingredients

  • 1 pkg yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 2 c milk
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 4 c flour
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Combine shortening and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Cream the mixture until smooth.
  3. Scald the milk and pour it into the creamed mixture.
  4. Stir to dissolve the sugar and incorporate the milk.
  5. Add the egg and let the mixture cool to room temperature.
  6. Mix salt and yeast in one cup of flour and add to the cooled mixture.
  7. Add three cups of flour and mix well.
  8. Cover the dough and let it rise for one hour.
  9. Beat the dough to deflate it.
  10. Add about one cup of additional flour to make a smooth dough.
  11. Let the dough rise until doubled in bulk.
  12. Divide the dough and place in greased pans or muffin tins.
  13. Allow the dough to rise again until puffy.
  14. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) until golden brown.
