Ingredients

  • 6 slices white bread, stale
  • 3 cups milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Beat the eggs slightly; add sugar, salt, vanilla, and eggs to the milk.
  2. Butter slices of bread and arrange in a 1 1/2-quart baking dish, buttered side down, with raisins between slices.
  3. Pour the liquid mixture over the bread slices and let stand for 1 hour.
  4. Dot the top with butter and bake about 1 hour at 350°F.
  5. Serve while hot with hard sauce, cream, or plain.
