Ingredients

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Boil the raisins, sugar, shortening, and 1 cup water for 3 minutes; let cool.
  2. Add the flour, soda, salt, and spices to the cooled mixture.
  3. Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch square pan.
  4. Bake in a very slow oven at 325°F for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the cake pulls away from the sides of the pan.
