Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Put together all ingredients except flour, baking powder, and baking soda in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Boil for 3 minutes. Let cool.
  3. Add dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda) to the cooled mixture.
  4. Mix well until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into a glass loaf pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes to one hour.
