  • 1 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1/4 lb. smoked sausage or diced ham

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9 x 13 1/2-inch casserole dish.
  2. Cook sausage or ham in a skillet and cut into bite-sized pieces.
  3. Place cubed bread and cooked sausage or ham on the bottom of the casserole dish.
  4. Mix eggs, milk, shredded Cheddar cheese, salt, and dry mustard with a mixer or in a blender.
  5. Do not overbeat. Pour the mixture over the bread and sausage in the casserole dish.
  6. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.

Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier texture, consider using half-and-half instead of milk. You can swap the Cheddar cheese for your favorite cheese, such as Gruyère or Monterey Jack, for a different flavor profile. If you want to add more vegetables, sautéed onions or bell peppers can enhance the dish. Ensure not to overbeat the egg mixture to keep it fluffy.

Serving Suggestions

This dish is perfect for brunch and pairs beautifully with fresh fruit or a light salad. Consider serving it alongside a classic breakfast item like crispy bacon or sausage links for a heartier meal. For a sweet finish, you might enjoy a slice of Bananaberry Pie or a piece of Karen's Dessert to round out the meal.

Storage & Reheating

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place individual portions in the microwave for about 1-2 minutes, or until heated through. Alternatively, you can reheat the entire casserole in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes.
