Ingredients

  • 1 cup lard
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup dark molasses
  • 1 cup sour milk
  • 4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Mix lard, brown sugar, molasses, and sour milk in a bowl.
  2. Set the mixture aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine all the dry ingredients: baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  4. Combine the dry mixture with the wet mixture.
  5. Drop tablespoon-sized balls onto a greased cookie sheet.
  6. Press the balls to flatten.
  7. Bake at 350°F until done.
