A classic homemade English bread with a crusty exterior and soft interior, perfect for breakfast, sandwiches, or toasting with butter and honey. Suitable for all bread lovers.

Ingredients

  • 5 1/2 to 6 cups flour
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • cornmeal

Instructions

  1. Combine 3 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and baking soda in a mixing bowl.
  2. Heat the milk and water to 125°F.
  3. Add the warm liquids to the dry mixture and beat well.
  4. Stir in enough additional flour to make a stiff batter.
  5. Spoon the batter into two greased bread pans sprinkled with cornmeal.
  6. Sprinkle the tops of the batter with cornmeal and cover the pans.
  7. Let the bread rise in a warm place for 45 minutes.
  8. Bake at 400°F for 25 minutes.
  9. Remove the bread from pans immediately and cool on a wire rack.
  10. Slice and serve toasted with butter and honey.
