Ingredients

  • 1 c. Crisco
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. soda
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 3 c. sugar
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Beat Crisco and sugar until well combined and creamy.
  2. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix flour with soda and salt.
  4. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the flour.
  5. Add lemon juice and blend well.
  6. In a clean bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  7. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the batter.
  8. Grease and flour two medium loaf pans.
  9. Pour the batter into the prepared pans.
  10. Bake in a 350°F oven for about 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
