Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 quart sweet milk
  • 1 packet yeast
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • flour

Instructions

  1. Put milk, shortening, and sugar in a saucepan over low heat; let scald, not boil.
  2. Take off heat and when lukewarm, add yeast which has been dissolved in a small amount of water.
  3. Place mixture in a large bowl and add enough flour to make dough the consistency of waffle batter.
  4. Let rise for two hours until doubled in bulk.
  5. Add salt, baking powder, and soda, then add enough flour to make a kneadable dough.
  6. Take half of the mixture and place in another bowl.
  7. Cover each bowl with foil and place in refrigerator to let rise overnight.
  8. Dough will keep for a week to 10 days in refrigerator and the full recipe does not have to be baked at one time.
  9. Take the desired amount of dough from the bowl, place on a floured board, and shape into rolls.
  10. Place rolls on a greased pan and let rise for 2 hours at room temperature.
  11. Bake at 375°F until golden brown.
