- Pat part of the homemade bread dough out about 1 inch thick onto a well oiled large cookie sheet with sides.
- Push some holes down into the dough so the topping will sink in as it bakes.

- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread the chopped anchovies or sardines evenly over the dough.
- Add the mashed tomatoes (if using).
