Tips & Substitutions

For a lighter texture, make sure to beat the dough well after each flour addition. If you don't have shortening, unsalted butter can be a great substitute, though it may alter the flavor slightly. To speed up the rising process, place the dough in a slightly warm oven. Additionally, try adding a pinch of cinnamon along with the nutmeg for an extra flavor boost.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Fastnachts warm, dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with Cream Cocoa Icing for a decadent treat. They make a delightful addition to brunch alongside Cucumber Sandwiches or can be enjoyed with a refreshing Mango Shake for a sweet pairing. For a more festive touch, consider serving them with flavored syrups or fruit preserves.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover Fastnachts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you want to keep them longer, freeze them in a single layer, then wrap tightly in plastic wrap and place in a freezer bag. To reheat, pop them in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 5-10 minutes until warmed through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant yeast instead of fresh yeast for this recipe?

Yes, you can use instant yeast instead of fresh yeast. Use about 1 tablespoon of instant yeast, and there's no need to dissolve it in the warm milk. Just mix it directly into the flour before adding the wet ingredients.

What oil is best for frying the Fastnachts?

For frying Fastnachts, vegetable oil or canola oil is best due to their high smoke points. Avoid using olive oil, as it may impart an unwanted flavor and has a lower smoke point.

How do I know when the dough is properly risen?

The dough is properly risen when it has doubled in size and feels light and airy to the touch. You can also perform the 'poke test' by gently pressing your finger into the dough; if the indentation springs back slowly, it's ready to be shaped.
