Ingredients

  • 3 cups white flour
  • 1 1/2 cups barley flour
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 cups buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups shortening

Instructions

  1. Add soda to the buttermilk or sour milk and set aside.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: white flour, barley flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Work in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the milk and soda mixture until a soft dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough in half.
  6. Pat each half into a 1/2-inch thick circle.
  7. Place on a cookie sheet and bake in a 400°F (200°C) oven for 20 to 25 minutes.
